Direct answer

Google Search Lift measures whether eligible YouTube or Demand Gen exposure causes more organic searches for a brand or product by comparing treatment and control groups. Indian agencies need Google account access, the Country A budget threshold, specific brand terms and enough impressions. API v26 now exposes lift metrics and uncertainty, but Search Lift does not prove sales or profit.

What changed in Google Ads API v26?

Google Ads API v26 added a read-only SearchLiftKeywordBundle resource, Search Lift segments and 15 reporting metrics. Agencies with eligible, allowlisted customer IDs can now retrieve study outcomes programmatically instead of relying only on manually exported reports.

The new reporting fields include:

  • relative search lift;
  • the lower and upper bounds of a 90% confidence interval;
  • normalized incremental searches;
  • an incremental-searches p-value;
  • Search Lift impressions;
  • Search Lift cost in micros; and
  • segments for the search-term bundle and Google search property.

API access is not universal. Google's experiment-reporting documentation says the customer ID must be on an allowlist managed through Google support or a Google representative. Keyword bundles are configured in the Google Ads interface or by Google representatives, and their keyword contents are not selectable through Google Ads Query Language. Treat the API as a reporting layer, not a substitute for study access or setup.

What does Search Lift actually measure?

Search Lift estimates whether people exposed to an eligible ad campaign were more likely to search organically on Google or YouTube for the selected brand or product terms than a comparable control group. Google forms treatment and control groups and reports an aggregate difference.

This is a causal lift design for search behavior, not a search-volume dashboard and not a conversion-attribution report. A positive result supports the statement that eligible ad exposure increased specified organic searches under the study design. It does not automatically show that those searches produced site visits, purchases, qualified leads, revenue or profit.

Use the attribution, incrementality and MMM guide when the business question is broader than search behavior. Search Lift can be one causal evidence layer, but it does not replace conversion lift, experiments in owned systems, finance data or marketing mix modeling.

Is Google Search Lift available in India?

India is listed in Google's Country A group for Search Lift budget recommendations. Google's current table gives Country A a minimum recommended budget of USD 5,000 over 28 days, converted to local currency using Google's quarterly exchange rates. Google notes that this is the same minimum budget used for one Brand Lift question.

That number is a qualification threshold, not a promised study result. Google also recommends at least 1.5 million study impressions to provide a chance of detecting lift. The needed budget may be higher after considering auction prices, campaign scope, study duration, audience size and the number of products or brands being measured.

Search Lift is not available in every account. Google's help documentation tells advertisers to contact a Google account representative. An agency should therefore record three separate gates:

  1. market eligibility;
  2. customer-account access and Google support; and
  3. budget and impression sufficiency for the proposed design.

Do not present Country A inclusion as proof that a particular client, campaign or account is approved.

Which campaigns can enter a Search Lift study?

Google's current lift-study documentation describes Search Lift support for eligible YouTube video campaigns, Demand Gen campaigns and supported TV inventory. Exact eligibility depends on the account, product, campaign setup and study configuration.

Before asking Google to create a study, inventory the campaigns and answer:

  • Which single brand or product is the study intended to measure?
  • Are the campaigns eligible for lift measurement in the account?
  • Will the campaign dates support the full study window?
  • Is there enough budget and likely impression volume?
  • Are the same users or campaigns already participating in another overlapping experiment?
  • Can the agency avoid major targeting, creative or budget changes during the measurement window?
  • Who owns the Google representative relationship and the final study approval?

Google states that a campaign cannot participate simultaneously in two studies for different products or brands. Separate the commercial question before grouping campaigns. A vague study that mixes products, audiences or brand terms creates an interpretation problem even if the platform returns a number.

For Demand Gen planning, use the August 2026 agency testing checklist and the cross-format creative reuse checklist to stabilize campaign and creative inputs before the study starts.

How should an agency choose Search Lift terms?

Google allows up to five search-term groups and recommends keeping each group small, usually one to three highly specific terms. Terms should represent the brand, product or campaign idea being tested. Avoid broad generic phrases, irrelevant category language and competitor names.

A useful agency review separates four term types:

| Term type | Example pattern | Include? | Reason | |---|---|---:|---| | Exact brand | Brand name and a common spelling variant | Usually | Closest observable expression of brand demand | | Branded product | Brand plus product or named range | Often | Useful when the campaign promotes a distinct product | | Generic category | Broad product category without the brand | Usually not | Too much unrelated demand and competitive noise | | Competitor | Another advertiser's brand or product | No | Does not represent lift for the measured advertiser |

The terms should be chosen before results are visible. Do not keep adding or removing phrases until a preferred story appears. Preserve the proposed bundles, the business rationale, the approval date and any Google-requested edits so the result can be audited later.

Small term groups also help interpretation. If one group contains the advertiser's name, a category, a campaign slogan and several product features, a positive aggregate result does not show which underlying query changed.

Original artifact: Search Lift readiness and interpretation register

Use one register per study. The study should not enter setup until every release gate has an owner and evidence.

How should agencies read relative lift and confidence intervals?

Start with the study status and the full uncertainty range. Relative search lift is the percentage difference estimated between treatment and control search behavior. It is not the share of exposed people who searched and it is not the percentage increase in revenue.

The 90% confidence interval communicates the range of lift estimates consistent with the study's sampling uncertainty under Google's model. If the interval is wide, the result is imprecise even when the point estimate looks large. If the interval includes zero, the study has not cleanly separated a positive effect from no effect at that confidence level.

The incremental-searches p-value is another signal about the strength of the evidence against a no-lift result. Report the p-value with the point estimate, bounds, study status, spend and impression scale. Do not translate a p-value into “the probability the campaign worked.” It describes the observed evidence under a statistical assumption; it does not establish commercial value.

An agency summary should distinguish:

  • direction: positive, negative or inconclusive;
  • magnitude: the reported point estimate;
  • precision: confidence-interval width and relationship to zero;
  • evidence: study status and p-value;
  • scale: eligible impressions and cost; and
  • business consequence: what decision changes, if any.

What does API reporting unlock for an agency?

API v26 makes recurring controls more practical. An agency can pull the same defined fields for every eligible client study, preserve results over time and reduce manual transcription. A normalized reporting table can include customer ID, experiment or lift configuration, search-term bundle, search property, relative lift, 90% bounds, p-value, normalized incremental searches, impressions and cost.

The most useful automation is quality control, not a leaderboard. Flag:

  • missing confidence bounds;
  • incomplete or in-progress study states;
  • bundles without an approved term rationale;
  • a point estimate presented without the p-value;
  • cost or impressions omitted from the interpretation;
  • a result joined to the wrong product or brand; and
  • summaries that call search lift “revenue lift,” “ROAS lift” or “incremental sales.”

Because the keyword contents themselves are not selectable through GAQL, retain the approved term definitions in an agency-controlled register. Join them to the returned bundle identifier only after checking that the mapping is current.

How should Search Lift change a media decision?

Define the decision before the study. Examples include whether to keep a video-led awareness layer, whether a named product campaign creates additional brand demand, or whether two creative territories deserve a more controlled follow-up.

Then apply a decision rule:

  1. if lift is positive and reasonably precise, check whether the effect is commercially meaningful and supported by downstream behavior;
  2. if the point estimate is positive but uncertainty is wide, keep the finding inconclusive and improve power or design before scaling;
  3. if no lift is detected, examine whether the study had enough budget, impressions, stable execution and specific terms before concluding the campaign had no effect; and
  4. if a result conflicts with sales or site evidence, investigate the measurement boundary instead of choosing the most flattering metric.

Search Lift answers a narrower question than conversion lift. It can show increased organic search behavior without showing purchases. Conversely, a campaign might influence conversions through routes that do not create measurable branded searches. Put both results in the same decision record without forcing them to agree.

What can public ad data not prove?

Public Meta or Google ad data cannot prove a competitor's Search Lift eligibility, customer allowlist, study configuration, treatment and control assignment, search-term groups, budget, eligible impressions, measured search properties, p-value, confidence interval, relative lift, incremental searches, conversion impact, revenue, profit or internal decision rule.

Public ad libraries can show observable creative, dates, advertiser identity, format and landing-page clues. They cannot reveal whether a competitor ran a valid lift study or whether visible ads caused organic searches. Use the Advertisng research methodology to separate observation from inference and the public ad-intelligence workspace to organize visible evidence. Keep private measurement claims in authorized client systems.

Frequently asked questions

Is Search Lift the same as Brand Lift?

No. Both use treatment and control logic, but Search Lift measures changes in organic searches for selected brand or product terms. Brand Lift asks survey questions about measures such as awareness, consideration or ad recall. Google's budget table notes a shared minimum threshold comparison, but the outcomes are different.

Can every Google Ads account create a Search Lift study?

No. Google's current documentation says Search Lift is not available to all accounts and directs advertisers to a Google account representative. API reporting also requires an allowlisted customer ID.

What is the India minimum budget?

Google currently places India in Country A and lists a USD 5,000 minimum recommended budget over 28 days, converted with quarterly exchange rates. Confirm the current local-currency amount and account eligibility with Google before planning.

Google recommends at least 1.5 million study impressions to provide a chance of detecting lift. This is not a guarantee of statistical significance; the detectable effect also depends on baseline search behavior, term selection, audience allocation and study execution.

Can an agency use generic category keywords?

Google recommends small groups of highly specific brand or product terms. Generic category terms can contain large amounts of unrelated demand and make the result harder to interpret.

Does positive Search Lift prove incremental revenue?

No. It supports a causal claim about measured organic search behavior under the study design. Revenue and profit require separate conversion, customer and finance evidence.

Can public competitor ads estimate Search Lift?

No. Public ads can support creative and market research, but they do not expose the treatment/control experiment or its private results.

A restrained next step

Before asking Google to create a study, complete the readiness register for one brand and one decision. Confirm account access, current India budget guidance, campaign eligibility, expected impressions and specific search terms. If the study runs, report the point estimate, uncertainty and p-value together, then connect the finding to authorized site, conversion and finance evidence. Use Advertisng only for observable public-ad research, not for private lift claims.
