Repurpose Social Creative for YouTube Demand Gen: Agency QA Checklist
Adapt existing social creative for YouTube Demand Gen with an agency QA workflow covering formats, safe zones, AI enhancements, approvals and controlled testing.
The Advertisng Research Team studies observable public Meta and Google ad evidence, documents limitations, and turns repeatable findings into agency research workflows.
Direct answer
Google's October 1 guidance says agencies can start Demand Gen YouTube creative with existing social assets, but reuse should not mean blind reposting. Before launch, adapt aspect ratios and safe zones, review default AI enhancements, preserve brand and disclosure approvals, add new assets gradually, and judge results with first-party campaign data, not competitor-ad visibility or an Ad Strength label alone.
Can agencies reuse social creative for YouTube Demand Gen?
Yes, as a starting point. Google's October 1, 2026 Ads Decoded summary says existing social creative can provide a solid base for Demand Gen when it follows Google's asset specifications and guidelines. The same guidance recommends gradual changes and creative quality over volume so the system has enough time to measure new assets.
That is not permission to upload every Meta or short-form asset unchanged. A source file may be technically accepted while its hook, pacing, text placement, audio, crop or call to action is poorly suited to the YouTube placement where it serves. Treat reuse as an adaptation workflow with a preserved source master, a placement-specific version and a documented test question.
This article addresses Google Ads creative operations, not blanket legal clearance. Confirm client rights, talent and music permissions, product claims, restricted-category rules and required disclosures for every market in which the adapted asset will run.
What changed in Google's October 1 guidance?
Google highlighted three practical ideas for Demand Gen teams:
- Start with existing social assets when they meet the required specifications.
- Use Asset Studio's multimodal video tools to turn website URLs and photos into videos that stakeholders can preview before publication.
- Change assets gradually and prioritize the quality of new creative over sheer quantity.
The announcement is useful because it reduces the perceived production barrier to YouTube. It does not say that a social ad will retain its performance when moved to YouTube, that every account has identical creative-tool access or that an automatically generated version is ready without human review.
For the wider Demand Gen feature context, keep the August Demand Gen agency testing checklist separate. If the client is also moving legacy Display activity, complete the Display-to-Demand-Gen migration checklist before attributing any result to the new creative.
Original artifact: social-to-YouTube adaptation matrix
Use one record for each source asset and intended Demand Gen placement. A passed upload is not a passed creative review.
| QA gate | Evidence to record | Current Google requirement or control | Agency action | Stop if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Source master and rights | Original file, owner, talent, music, claim and approval scope | Platform acceptance does not establish ownership or local compliance | Preserve the master and written usage rights | Rights, source or approval scope is unclear |
| Aspect ratio | Source and output dimensions | Demand Gen supports horizontal, square and vertical assets; YouTube video guidance recommends 16:9, 1:1 and 9:16 | Export intentional versions rather than relying on one crop | A key subject, product or claim is cut off |
| Safe zone | Overlay map, captions, logo, product and CTA position | YouTube controls and overlays may occupy different areas by format and device | Review against Google's safe-zone templates | Essential content sits beneath likely interface overlays |
| Duration and placement | Video length and eligible placement | Demand Gen video minimum is 5 seconds; videos under 10 seconds cannot serve on YouTube in-stream | Match length to the planned placement mix | The version cannot serve where the media plan expects it |
| Hook and sound | First five seconds, spoken line, captions and sound-off comprehension | Shorts is immediately skippable; Google recommends vertical creative and sound for the native experience | Re-cut pacing and captioning for the placement | The asset depends on context missing outside the source platform |
| AI enhancements | Setting state, preview, generated orientations and approver | Video, image and auto-generated video enhancements can be enabled by default on new Demand Gen campaigns and can be turned off | Review every generated version and record the decision | The generated output changes claims, branding, people or product appearance |
| Disclosure and policy | AI-label decision, restricted-category check and market | Google says certain AI-edited or generated assets may need disclosures, including in India; its label setting does not guarantee legal compliance | Run policy and disclosure review separately | The team treats a platform label as complete compliance |
| Test design | Hypothesis, control, changed variable, primary outcome and conversion lag | Google recommends adding new assets first and making gradual changes to evergreen campaigns | Change one major creative variable at a time | Migration, channel expansion and creative replacement overlap |
| Public research | Advertiser, source URL, region, date, visible format and observation | Google's Transparency Center shows advertiser and served-ad evidence, not private account results | Use patterns to write an original hypothesis | A visible competitor ad is labelled a winner or copied directly |
The matrix separates four things that are often collapsed in agency production: source rights, technical eligibility, creative quality and measurement. Passing one does not prove the others.
Which formats should the agency prepare?
Google's current Demand Gen specifications cover images and video across YouTube, Discover, Gmail, Google Display Network sites and apps. For YouTube video, the recommended HD formats are horizontal 1920 by 1080, vertical 1080 by 1920 and square 1080 by 1080. For Demand Gen images, the supported families include square 1:1, horizontal 1.91:1, vertical 4:5 and vertical 9:16.
Do not mechanically stretch a 9:16 source into every shape. Recompose each version so the product, proof, supers and call to action remain legible. Google's universal video safe-zone guidance exists because overlays, buttons and calls to action can appear in different positions depending on the format, campaign and device.
Ad Strength can help diagnose asset coverage. Google's current guidance says a “Good” rating requires horizontal, square and vertical coverage for both images and videos, with video enhancements able to create missing square and vertical versions from a horizontal video. Treat that rating as a coverage signal. It is not a brand review, policy approval or forecast of profitable performance.
How should agencies review AI-created variations?
Google's current Demand Gen documentation says video enhancements can create vertical or shorter versions, pre-generated videos can be previewed and edited, and auto-generated video ads can build multiple orientations from text, image and brand-guideline inputs. It also says video enhancements and auto-generated video ads are enabled by default for new campaigns, with opt-out controls in ad settings.
Record the setting state before launch. Review every output for factual accuracy, visual continuity, product appearance, people, voice, music, captions, crop, logo treatment, offer terms and destination match. Preserve the generated preview and the exact version the client approved.
If AI editing or generation is involved, use the separate AI ad-label checklist. Google's help documentation says certain AI-created or edited assets require disclosures in India and warns that using Google's label setting does not itself guarantee legal compliance. Escalate uncertain legal or regulatory questions to qualified counsel.
What is a defensible creative test?
Start with one question: does a placement-adapted version improve the client's chosen qualified outcome against a stable control? Keep the destination, offer, audience approach, conversion definition and material campaign settings as stable as practical.
Google's current refresh guidance recommends adding new assets before removing existing ones, changing only a small portion of an evergreen asset set at a time, and allowing top assets at least 14 days to ramp before replacement when they underperform against the campaign goal. For high-volume creative tests, Google recommends a new campaign first and warns that large asset volumes need enough budget to receive meaningful exploration.
Use the evidence-first creative analysis rubric to code what actually changed: hook, proof, format, pacing, offer, CTA or destination. Evaluate with the client's own conversion quality, revenue and commercial guardrails after the relevant conversion window. Do not call a test successful because Ad Strength improved or because the asset began serving.
How can public competitor ads help the adaptation brief?
Public Meta and Google ads can help an agency inventory visible hooks, proof devices, pacing, aspect ratios, captions, offers, calls to action and landing-page continuity. Use the multi-platform ad-intelligence framework to preserve source-specific fields instead of flattening Meta and YouTube evidence into one generic “social” label.
Capture the advertiser identity, source URL, region, observation date, visible format, message and destination. Then write an original test hypothesis. For example: “Three visible category ads introduce the product before the first proof point; test an original product-first opening against the client's current control.” That is defensible research. “Copy the longest-running competitor ad” is not.
What can public ad data not prove?
Public Google or Meta ad data cannot prove a competitor's Demand Gen campaign type, channel controls, source master, crop settings, safe-zone review, AI-enhancement settings, prompts, disclosure workflow, budget, bids, audience, asset-level spend, conversion rate, revenue, profit or incrementality. A visible asset cannot show whether it was uploaded directly, generated in Asset Studio, adapted by an agency or selected automatically.
Ad visibility or longevity is not proof that the creative works. Public evidence can reveal an observable format and message worth investigating; only the client's controlled first-party measurement can establish whether an adapted version improves the intended business outcome.
Frequently asked questions
Can we upload a Meta Reels ad directly to YouTube Shorts?
It may meet the basic vertical format requirement, but the agency should still review rights, safe zones, captions, pacing, call to action, landing-page continuity and YouTube policy. Technical acceptance is not evidence that the version is placement-ready.
Does Google require three aspect ratios?
Google's current Ad Strength guidance uses horizontal, square and vertical coverage for a “Good” rating. Demand Gen can accept different asset combinations by format and placement. Verify the actual media plan and eligibility instead of producing variants only to chase a score.
Are video enhancements automatically enabled?
Google's current help documentation says video enhancements are enabled by default for new Demand Gen campaigns and can be turned off in the ad settings. Record the live account setting because availability and defaults can change.
Does an AI label make the ad compliant in India?
No. Google explicitly says its AI label setting does not guarantee compliance with specific regulations. Review the asset, market, product category and applicable obligations independently.
How quickly should we replace an underperforming asset?
Google's refresh guidance says an evergreen asset considered for replacement should have at least 14 days to ramp and should underperform relative to the campaign goal. Also account for the client's budget, conversion lag, learning state and sample quality.
A restrained next step
Run the adaptation matrix on a small set of approved source assets and define one test before adding production volume. If the team needs a separate workspace for observable Meta and Google references, the Advertisng Ad Library can organize those public examples in private client boards. It does not connect to ad accounts, generate proof of performance or approve adapted creative.
