Google AI Max for Shopping: Agency QA Checklist
Audit Google AI Max for Shopping across feeds, generated product titles, expanded URLs, exclusions, tracking templates and two-week reporting controls.
The Advertisng Research Team studies observable public Meta and Google ad evidence, documents limitations, and turns repeatable findings into agency research workflows.
Direct answer
Google has moved AI Max for Shopping into open beta, adding query-adapted product titles, Final URL expansion and new reporting to existing Shopping campaigns. Indian retail agencies should treat activation as a controlled change: validate English-feed attributes, Target ROAS eligibility, URL exclusions, tracking templates, generated assets and CRM outcomes, then wait at least two weeks before making major optimization changes.
What is Google AI Max for Shopping, and what changes?
AI Max for Shopping is a beta feature suite for existing Standard Shopping campaigns. Google's current documentation describes two main capabilities: text customization, which can adapt product titles to the shopper's query, and Final URL expansion, which can send traffic to a relevant commercial page outside the product URL in the Merchant Center feed.
The important agency implication is not that Google has added another automation label. The campaign can now change both the message surface and the destination path. That expands what must be checked before launch and what must be retained after launch.
Google says the beta is in open availability, but account access and visible settings can still differ. Check the client account rather than promising universal access. Google's current Help page also says text customization is limited to English-language feeds. Final URL expansion requires text customization and is available only with a Target ROAS bid strategy.
Which accounts and features should an agency verify before activation?
Start with feature eligibility and business constraints.
- Confirm that the campaign is an existing Shopping campaign and that the AI Max controls are visible in that account.
- Confirm the feed language. Google's current documentation limits text customization to English-language feeds.
- If the agency wants Final URL expansion, confirm that text customization is enabled and the campaign uses Target ROAS.
- List the commercial site areas that Google may use and the sections it must not use.
- Record the current feed titles, product URLs, bid strategy, conversion goals and tracking templates before changing anything.
- Confirm that the client's legal, brand and merchandising owners accept generated titles and non-feed landing pages.
Do not enable the feature simply because the switch is available. A client with weak product attributes, fragile tracking templates or a site full of noncommercial pages can create more review work than value.
Original artifact: AI Max for Shopping evidence register
Use this register before activation and again after the first two complete weeks. It separates platform behavior from the evidence an agency needs to keep.
| Control layer | Platform behavior to verify | Preflight proof | Two-week evidence | Stop or adjust condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Feed and language | Text customization uses feed and landing-page information; current support is limited to English feeds | Feed language, product IDs, title attributes, missing-value report and approval owner | Product-title report by product ID, query context and any disapproved or misleading result | Generated titles are inaccurate, noncompliant or materially inconsistent with product data |
| Generated product titles | Google may adapt a product title to better match a query | Sample of existing titles, required brand terms, regulated claims and merchandising rules | Original versus generated-title review, asset status and reviewer decision | A generated title changes product meaning, promise, pack size, price context or policy posture |
| Final URL expansion | Google may choose a relevant commercial URL beyond the feed's product URL | Allowed commercial directories, URL exclusions, canonical status and mobile rendering | Landing-pages report with “Selected by: Automatically selected,” conversions and page-quality checks | Traffic reaches irrelevant, unavailable, thin, noncommercial or policy-sensitive pages |
| Tracking templates | Expanded URLs can interact differently with ValueTrack and custom parameters | Final URL suffix, tracking template, redirects, {lpurl} handling and product-ID dependencies | Resolved landing URL, click identifiers, analytics session, order or lead reconciliation | Dynamic URLs fail, redirect incorrectly, return 404 or lose required attribution fields |
| Exclusions and messaging | Account can apply search-term, brand, URL and messaging restrictions within documented limits | Exclusion lists, reason, owner, review date and approved message boundaries | Search terms, excluded traffic checks, changed restrictions and exception log | Restricted term, brand, page or message appears in delivery evidence |
| Reporting and outcome | Reports expose generated titles, search terms, landing pages and expanded URL assets | Baseline spend, value, ROAS, product mix, conversion lag and CRM outcome | Two full weeks of campaign and client-side results with material account changes logged | Performance or quality deteriorates outside the agreed guardrail, or evidence cannot be reconciled |
This register is more useful than a one-time screenshot of the setting. It gives the agency a repeatable record of what was allowed, what Google generated, what the client observed and why the team kept, changed or disabled a control.
How should agencies validate generated product titles?
Generated titles need both performance review and product-truth review. Google's product-title report can show the original and generated titles associated with products. Use it to sample high-spend products, regulated categories, large discounts, bundles, variants and queries where the generated wording materially differs from the feed.
For each sample, ask:
- Does the title still describe the exact product and variant?
- Has it introduced an unsupported benefit, urgency claim or superlative?
- Are brand, model, size, quantity and condition still clear?
- Does the destination page substantiate the wording?
- Would the client approve the title in another paid placement?
Remove or correct unfavorable assets using the controls available in the account. Do not treat a higher click-through rate as permission for a misleading product description. Feed quality remains the first control: improve incomplete and ambiguous source attributes before trying to manage every generated variation downstream.
How should agencies prevent broken landing pages and attribution?
Final URL expansion changes the landing-page surface. Google's documentation warns that some tracking templates can produce dynamic URLs that fail or return a 404. It also notes that {product_id} can be empty when Final URL expansion serves a non-product landing page. A template that assumes every click has a Merchant Center product ID can therefore lose information or break routing.
Before activation:
- inventory account, campaign and ad-group tracking templates;
- identify every template or custom parameter that requires a product ID;
- test representative product pages, category pages and other allowed commercial URLs;
- prefer a landing-page-safe
{lpurl}pattern where the client's measurement design permits it; - exclude pages that are noncommercial, expired, thin, restricted or operationally unsafe; and
- verify the full path from ad click to analytics, consent state, checkout or lead event, CRM and revenue reconciliation.
Google documents a hybrid URL approach for preserving product-level information while allowing expanded URLs. The correct implementation still depends on the client's redirect, analytics and parameter rules. Preserve a test matrix with the resolved URL and outcome rather than approving the template from syntax alone.
Which exclusions and restrictions matter most?
AI Max for Shopping exposes several controls that should have named owners.
- URL exclusions keep selected pages or directories out of Final URL expansion.
- Search-term exclusions prevent delivery for defined terms. Google's current Help page documents up to 25 terms for this feature.
- Brand exclusions help control associations with selected brands.
- Messaging restrictions constrain words or phrases in generated text. Google's current documentation describes up to 40 restrictions.
These numbers and interfaces are time-sensitive beta details. Verify them in the client account on the activation date. An exclusion list is not a permanent strategy: review it after query and landing-page evidence arrives, and record why each important exclusion was added, retained or removed.
What should an agency measure after two weeks?
Google's reporting guidance recommends waiting at least two weeks after enabling AI Max for Shopping before making changes such as adding text guidelines. That is a change-control recommendation, not a promise that every account will have enough volume for a reliable conclusion in 14 days.
Review four evidence groups together:
- Generation quality: product-title changes, expanded URL assets and unfavorable or noncompliant outputs.
- Traffic quality: search terms, landing pages, device mix and product or category distribution.
- Measurement integrity: resolved URLs, click IDs, analytics sessions, conversion imports and CRM or order reconciliation.
- Commercial outcome: conversion value, margin, cancellation or return signals, lead quality and agreed client guardrails.
Google reports that its internal global 2026 retail benchmark found advertisers using AI Max for Shopping typically saw about 5% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS. Treat that as a Google-reported aggregate, not a forecast, experiment result for the client or guarantee. Client account mix, feed quality, seasonality, bidding, conversion definitions and implementation can differ.
For a disciplined measurement record, connect this review to the Data Strength Uplift agency checklist. A platform conversion increase is not enough if the underlying business outcome or data path cannot be reconciled.
How does this differ from AI Max for Search?
Both use the AI Max name, but the implementation surfaces are different. The existing AI Max for Search upgrade checklist covers Search campaign controls, Dynamic Search Ads transition and query expansion. AI Max for Shopping adds a retail-specific dependency on Merchant Center product data, generated product titles and landing pages that may extend beyond the feed URL.
Keep separate change logs and QA matrices. A control that is acceptable for a Search campaign does not prove that the Shopping feed, product identity, destination or product-level tracking will behave correctly.
How can public competitor-ad research contribute?
Public Meta and Google ads can help an agency form a retail hypothesis before changing the client account. Use the Google Ads Transparency Center research workflow and multi-platform ad-intelligence framework to document observable offers, product categories, message patterns, destinations and served dates.
That evidence can inform questions such as: Which offer language deserves a controlled test? Are competitors routing shoppers to product pages or category collections? Which visible product claims need stronger substantiation in the client's feed and landing pages?
Advertisng's public ad-intelligence workspace can preserve visible ad references and research notes. It does not expose a competitor's Merchant Center feed, AI Max settings or Shopping campaign performance.
What can public ad data not prove?
Public ad data cannot prove a competitor's feed attributes, original or generated product titles, search terms, Final URL expansion settings, URL exclusions, brand or messaging restrictions, tracking templates, bid strategy, Target ROAS, product-level conversion data, spend, revenue, margin, returns or profitability. A visible ad and destination can support a research hypothesis, but they cannot establish which private Shopping control produced an outcome.
The Advertisng research methodology separates observable public evidence from inference. Keep the same boundary in client presentations.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI Max for Shopping available in India?
Google announced the feature as an open beta rather than a closed pilot. Actual account access can still differ, so verify the campaign settings in the client's account. Text customization is currently limited to English-language feeds according to Google's Help documentation.
Does Final URL expansion work with every bid strategy?
No. Google's current Help page says Final URL expansion for AI Max for Shopping is available only with Target ROAS, and text customization must also be enabled. Verify this again at activation because beta requirements can change.
Can an agency keep traffic on feed product URLs?
Yes. Google's product announcement says Final URL expansion can be turned off. If it is enabled, use URL exclusions and landing-page reporting to constrain and review eligible destinations.
Can `{product_id}` be used in every AI Max click URL?
Do not assume so. Google warns that {product_id} can be empty when Final URL expansion serves a non-product page. Test templates and downstream attribution for both product and expanded landing pages.
Should the team optimize immediately if the first few days look weak?
Not by default. Google's reporting guidance says to wait at least two weeks after enabling the feature before making changes such as adding text guidelines. The team should still act sooner for policy, accuracy, broken-page, tracking or client-safety failures.
A restrained next step
Run the evidence register on one suitable Shopping campaign. Approve the feed, destination and tracking boundaries first, then preserve two complete weeks of generated-title, landing-page and business-outcome evidence before expanding. Use public competitor ads to sharpen the hypothesis, not to invent private account proof.
