Google Ads in AI Mode India: Agency Readiness Checklist (2026)
Prepare eligible Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns for ads in AI Mode India with controls for matching, assets, feeds and measurement.
The Advertisng Research Team studies observable public Meta and Google ad evidence, documents limitations, and turns repeatable findings into agency research workflows.
Direct answer
Google has expanded ads in AI Mode to India, but agencies do not need a new campaign or separate budget. Eligible Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns can participate automatically in English. Before scaling, verify matching, negatives, assets, feeds, landing-page claims, conversion quality and aggregate reporting. Public ad libraries cannot show whether a competitor actually served inside AI Mode.
What changed for advertisers in India?
Google announced on October 28, 2026 that ads in AI Mode are expanding to India and nine other markets. The rollout is for English, and ads remain clearly labeled Sponsored. Google also announced multiturn ads for follow-up queries in the United States; the announcement does not say that multiturn ads are available in India.
The distinction matters. An India agency can prepare eligible campaigns for the AI Mode inventory now, but it should not promise a United States-only multiturn format or imply that every eligible campaign will immediately serve there.
Google says AI Mode queries are, on average, three times longer than traditional Search queries. That figure comes from a United States report and describes query behavior, not a guaranteed India campaign outcome. Google also reports similar click-through rates for sponsored and organic product-list items in a short United States internal-data window. Do not reuse that result as an India benchmark, forecast or client promise.
Which campaigns can appear in AI Mode?
Google's current Help documentation lists three automatically eligible campaign types:
- existing Search campaigns;
- Shopping campaigns; and
- Performance Max campaigns.
Advertisers do not need a new campaign or separate AI Mode budget. Text and Shopping ads can appear, while Google says it is also experimenting with formats such as local inventory and vehicle ads.
Eligibility is not delivery. The auction still evaluates relevance, bids, budgets, policies, campaign settings and available commercial intent. Record the campaign's existing state before making changes so the team can distinguish rollout visibility from a simultaneous bidding, creative or feed change.
How does matching work in AI Mode?
Google documents two matching paths:
- Direct query matching: the user's search already expresses commercial intent, so an ad can match the query in a way similar to standard Search.
- Contextual matching: a longer or exploratory question develops commercial relevance through the query and the AI response, allowing an eligible ad to match that combined context.
AI Max for Search with search-term matching enabled, broad match, Shopping and Performance Max can participate in direct and contextual matching. Exact- and phrase-match Search keywords are eligible when the query contains direct commercial intent, but Google says they are not eligible for contextual matching on broader exploratory questions.
That does not mean an agency should switch every campaign to broader automation. Use the AI Max upgrade checklist to review brand controls, locations of interest, URL controls, asset generation, migration state and measurement before changing targeting.
Original artifact: AI Mode paid-placement readiness and evidence register
Complete one row for each client campaign proposed for the India rollout. Keep configuration evidence separate from delivery and business outcomes.
| Evidence layer | Required record | Release gate | Claim allowed | Claim not allowed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Market and language | Target country, language and review date | India and English eligibility confirmed in current Help documentation | The campaign is in a currently listed market-language combination | Every Indian-language query can show an AI Mode ad |
| Campaign eligibility | Search, Shopping or Performance Max campaign ID and status | Campaign type is listed and active | The campaign is eligible to enter relevant auctions | Eligibility guarantees AI Mode impressions |
| Matching path | AI Max, broad, exact, phrase, Shopping or Performance Max configuration | Intended direct or contextual matching path is documented | The setting can participate under Google's current rules | A specific query will trigger an ad |
| Negative and brand controls | Negative keywords, brand exclusions and account-level restrictions | Existing safeguards reviewed before expansion | Named controls remain configured | Controls guarantee every generated context is acceptable |
| Creative assets | Headlines, descriptions, images, prices and approvals | Claims and combinations are current and substantiated | Approved campaign assets are available to the auction | The agency controls Google's independent AI explainer |
| Website context | Canonical landing pages, visible facts, policies and last review | Public page matches the offer and current business facts | The destination provides current public context | Website copy guarantees a particular AI explainer |
| Merchant Center feed | Titles, descriptions, images, price, availability, shipping and returns | Feed and landing page reconcile | Product data is complete for Shopping eligibility | Feed completeness guarantees placement or performance |
| Conversion evidence | Primary conversion, value, CRM or commerce outcome and consent state | Client-owned outcome can be reconciled | The campaign has a governed success measure | Platform clicks alone prove commercial value |
| Reporting boundary | Campaign report, search terms report and analytics annotation | Team accepts that reviewed documentation describes aggregate inclusion | AI Mode-triggered activity is included in standard reports | A standalone AI Mode result is known without a documented breakdown |
| Test design | Baseline, one material change, review window and stop rule | Confounders and minimum evidence are named | Observed performance can be reviewed against a baseline | A before-after change proves incrementality |
What should agencies do about AI explainers?
Some AI placements can include an independent explanation generated by Google's Gemini models. Google says this explanation can use the user's query, the AI response and publicly available sources, including the advertiser's website.
The explainer is not an ad headline or description. Advertisers cannot manually write, edit, approve or opt out of it. Agencies should therefore govern the public facts from which context may be drawn:
- keep product and service pages current;
- make eligibility, limitations, pricing and offer terms explicit;
- remove stale or contradictory claims;
- keep structured data aligned with visible content;
- document regulated or high-risk claims and their substantiation; and
- verify that generated landing-page routes do not create 404s or mismatched promises.
The AI Mode source-links GEO checklist helps govern owned source pages. Paid participation and organic citation remain separate: Google says buying ads does not influence organic AI answers, and organic citation does not affect ad-auction eligibility.
Which controls still apply?
Google says existing account and campaign guardrails continue to apply, including negative keywords and asset pinning. However, agencies should review the interaction with automated settings rather than assuming every old safeguard behaves identically.
AI Max search-term matching can use broad-match and keywordless technology. Text customization and Final URL expansion can tailor copy and select a different relevant page. Google's AI Max documentation warns that Final URL expansion can conflict with some tracking templates and that asset pinning is not respected when a different relevant URL is selected.
For Performance Max, preserve negative keywords, brand exclusions, Final URL expansion settings, search themes and asset-group boundaries. The channel-prioritization budget checklist owns the separate question of how spend is guided across Google channels, search partners and Display inventory.
How should Shopping campaigns prepare?
Shopping eligibility depends on useful, accurate product data. Google recommends complete and fresh Merchant Center fields, including:
- descriptive titles and descriptions;
- multiple high-resolution product and lifestyle images;
- accurate price and sale price;
- availability that matches the destination;
- product ratings and highlights where eligible; and
- clear shipping and return policies.
An AI Mode expansion is not a reason to rewrite feed attributes with speculative conversational phrases. Start with accurate product facts and the language customers use to compare options. Reconcile every material field with the landing page before measuring rollout effects.
Can an agency target or exclude AI Mode separately?
No. Google's current Help page says advertisers cannot target only AI Overviews or AI Mode and cannot opt out of those experiences separately from Search. Existing controls such as negative keywords and brand exclusions remain available.
The same page says AI Mode uses the standard auction and CPC or conversion-based bidding models, with no extra participation charge. That does not mean the inventory is free or economically neutral. Agencies still need approved budgets, conversion quality, margin or lead-quality guardrails and a review of where incremental spend appears. Use the seasonal budget-adjustment checklist when a temporary India demand spike changes the campaign's pacing or approved spend envelope.
How should reporting be interpreted?
Google says queries that trigger ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in aggregate in standard campaign metrics and the search terms report. The reviewed documentation does not promise a standalone AI Mode performance breakdown.
Use a dated measurement note containing:
- the India expansion date;
- campaign types and targeting settings;
- negatives, brand controls and URL settings;
- asset or feed changes;
- impressions, clicks, cost and conversions from standard reports;
- observable search-term themes where available;
- analytics, commerce or CRM outcomes; and
- other demand, budget or policy changes in the same period.
Do not label all post-rollout campaign movement as AI Mode performance. Search terms insights and the search terms report can differ because of grouping, coverage and conversion lag. Use the attribution, incrementality and MMM guide when the decision requires causal evidence rather than an operating trend.
How can public competitor-ad research contribute?
Public Meta and Google ad sources can help an agency observe competitor messages, products, offers, formats, destinations and served dates. Those observations can improve the questions, comparisons and proof devices prepared for the client's own campaigns and landing pages.
Use the Google Ads Transparency Center research guide to preserve the advertiser, creative, location and date exposed by the public source. Use the research-to-brief workflow to create an original response instead of copying a visible ad.
Public examples do not identify the Search experience in which an ad served. A visible ad in a transparency library is not evidence that it appeared inside AI Mode.
What can public ad data not prove?
Public Meta or Google ad data cannot prove that a competitor served inside AI Mode or AI Overviews, which query or AI response triggered the ad, whether matching was direct or contextual, which campaign type entered the auction, the use of AI Max, broad match, negatives or brand exclusions, the presence of an AI explainer, budget, bids, search terms, impressions, clicks, conversions, revenue, margin, lead quality or incrementality.
It also cannot prove that an ad visible after October 28 received any India AI Mode delivery. Use public ad evidence to form original creative and landing-page hypotheses. Use only the client's authorized Google Ads, analytics, commerce and CRM systems to evaluate delivery and outcomes.
Frequently asked questions
Are ads in AI Mode available in India?
Yes. Google's October 28 announcement and current Help documentation list India for ads within AI Mode and AI Overviews in English.
Does an advertiser need a new AI Mode campaign?
No. Google says eligible existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns participate automatically through the auction when relevant.
Can an agency target only AI Mode?
No. Google says advertisers cannot target AI Mode or AI Overviews exclusively and cannot opt out of them separately from Search.
Are multiturn ads available in India?
Google's October 28 announcement says multiturn ads are launching in the United States. It does not announce India availability. Verify current documentation before changing that statement.
Can exact-match keywords appear in AI Mode?
They can be eligible when the query expresses direct commercial intent. Google says exact and phrase match are not eligible for contextual matching on broader exploratory questions.
Can the advertiser edit Google's AI explainer?
No. Google says advertisers cannot manually write, edit, approve or opt out of AI explainers. Keep public website facts, offers and landing pages accurate.
Is there a separate AI Mode report in Google Ads?
The current Help page documents aggregate inclusion in campaign and search terms reports. Do not claim a standalone breakdown unless the client account and current documentation explicitly provide one.
Does paid participation improve organic AI visibility?
No. Google says paid advertising does not influence organic AI responses, and organic citation does not affect ad-auction eligibility.
