Google Ads vs Facebook Ads: A Decision Framework
Choose a platform from customer intent, creative evidence, measurement readiness, and operational constraints—not generic CPC tables.
The Advertisng Research Team studies observable public Meta and Google ad evidence, documents limitations, and turns repeatable findings into agency research workflows.
The short answer
Choose Google Ads when the campaign must capture expressed demand; choose Facebook and Instagram ads when the campaign must create or shape demand through audience delivery and visual storytelling. Many businesses need both, but the right starting point depends on customer intent, creative readiness, measurement, and the next constraint—not an industry-wide cost benchmark.
Start with the customer moment
Google Search can meet a person who is actively expressing a need. Meta placements can introduce a proposition before the person searches for it. That distinction is more durable than a copied CPC or CTR table, because auction prices and conversion rates vary by market, account, objective, creative, and measurement setup.
Use this decision tree
- Is there meaningful search demand for the problem or product? If yes, test Google Search capture.
- Can the value be demonstrated visually or through a strong narrative? If yes, test Meta demand creation.
- Is conversion tracking reliable enough to learn? Fix measurement before scaling either platform.
- Does the team have creative iteration capacity? Meta often exposes that constraint quickly.
- Does the offer require education before intent exists? Lead with explanatory creative, then capture resulting demand.
Compare the evidence you can actually observe
Use Google’s Ads Transparency Center and the Meta Ad Library to inspect how competitors express offers across public surfaces. This can reveal message and format choices, but not their allocation, targeting, or results.
Design a fair test
Define one business outcome, a comparable market window, clean tracking, and a budget large enough to learn within your own economics. Do not force identical creative into both platforms; preserve the proposition while adapting the execution to the user context.
Why generic benchmark tables mislead
Benchmarks blend different countries, industries, objectives, attribution windows, and account maturity. Use them only as broad context with a named source and date. Your own marginal customer-acquisition cost, contribution margin, lead quality, and incrementality are the decision metrics.
What public libraries cannot prove
They do not expose a competitor’s spend split, bids, audiences, conversions, profitability, or causal lift. Use multi-platform ad intelligence to form hypotheses and first-party measurement to make budget decisions.
